Viva Mexico

I may be the worst pseudo-blogger EVER. It has been WAY, WAY too long since I’ve posted anything of relevance or otherwise. I may have been a bit distracted by our recent move to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico (we will be splitting our time between our store here and our stores in Chicago).  However, in the immortal words of Slim Shady “Guess who’s Back?”  I’m sure the one 12 year old reader I have in Malaysia with a penchant for all things Sesame Street will be happy. Oh my beloved fan. Actually, there are some awesome things coming on the Street (Sesame)  front. Look for Brand NEW Sesame Street tshirt designs in the next few weeks…

Back to Mexico, our little “jaunt” was quite the adventure. Two cars, one with a 2ooo pound  trailer hitched, two dogs, three adults, one infant and a healthy dose of “what the hell were we thinking”, and here we are. None the wiser, but very content.  What kind of  crazy traveling have you done? Or have planned? Come on, spill. We won’t tell. :)

Here are some of our Mexico – themed t shirt designs:

TWILIGHT, STAR BRIGHT

I am not even going to try to fake it. I am well past the demographics, do not have a teenage daughter and have an innate aversion to pop culture hysteria. So I  kind of missed the boat on this Twilight phenomena. I get the whole Jacob or Edward dilemma, after all the best friend vs bad boy is as old as time. What I don’t get is how women paying off their 3rd minivan who should know that the sun has set on their swooning days are going nuts over this movie.  I guess the rigors of shuttling kids from soccer to ballet to tennis wear on modern-day uber moms a bit.

What does intrigue me (and not just because it sells tshirts, which is a good thing :) is the author.   What I find pretty fascinating is the story of Stephenie Meyer. As twihards (twilight hard-cores for the uninitiated), know Ms. Meyer was a stay at home mom  juggling three children when she had one dream that soon developed into a series of dreams. This nocturnal narrative grew into the Twilight series. Stephenie Meyer had never penned anything before this. Are you kidding me?  Not so much as a letter to the editor?  I may just force myself to take some naps today.

SESAME STREET TURNS 40!

C is fo Cookie - Sesame StreetUnbelievably, Sesame Street turned 40 yesterday. No childhood is complete without a healthy dose of  this educational staple.  In fact, after “earning” a couple of higher education degrees, I can honestly say that the lessons learned by some colorful muppets trumped many of my tenured professors musings.  No less for the wear, Sesame Street still rocks, unlike some other 40/50ish icons (Madonna?)

We are super excited that we will be getting new Sesame Street tshirt designs in the next month or so.  Really, who can resist Sesame Street? There is one character for everyone. Who is your favorite?

Michael Jackson is gone. They say its the end of an era, but wasn’t that era essential over when MJ as tabloid fodder eclipsed MJ as  a musical icon? In death, fame takes on a different hue. Instead of the white, hot glare of a 24/7 world spotlighting warts and all, the lights dim a bit, become more forgiving, eliciting regretful introspection.ilovemj

Michael Jackson’s musical legacy stands up to any glare, his place in the pantheon of musical geniuses/revolutionary is well-cemented and with few rivals. His place as a 20th century personality is a little more complicated.

Having grown up in the 80s, I always thought it was funny/interesting that between Prince and Michael Jackson, Prince turned out to be the “normal one” (same could be said about Christina & Britney).  We expect, even welcome, eccentricities in our artists. MJ took eccentric to a whole new level.  A level completely mj1illogical and unconstrained by normal social mores. Whether he did or didn’t, it still remains that in life he was undoubtedly plagued with self-doubt & personal demons. He was also an  incredible talent, tender with his loved ones and fans & trying to find his way.

I remain conflicted about how to feel about MJ.  What I do know for sure is that “Off the Wall” still stands as one of  my favorite albums ever.

MONSTERS ROCK and PIRATE POSERS!!!!

vampirereaperfrankenstein1medusamummypirate

The recent Somali pirates got me thinking…What the hell were these posers thinking? We are a people of imagination and tradition. We like our villains to be riddled with pyschosis, physically intriguing, adept at plotting & a good, solid narrative to back up this plotting. Skinny pirates in tattered shirts? Come on, Really? You are going up against the baddest military ever constructed and this is what you got?  Though I’ve never been a super gung-ho Military hawk, I have to admit that I swelled with pride at the Navy Seals’ skill and resolve. Highly Trained, highly skilled, highly heroic. AWESOME!

With that in mind, check out these true monsters and pirates. These tshirts harken back to when villains were villains.

WILD, WILD WEST!!

dreamcatchersittingbullhorse1cowboys1eaglegunslinging

These images got me thinking about national identity. Why do these images and others like them  say America?  I have never spent alot of time out West, have never been drawn to Westerns, never gone to a Rodeo (though I did make it out to a few C&W bars during my time in Austin) and thankfully never fell into the whole “SouthWest” decorating phase. Yet these images resonate with me.

The U.S. is so different in terrain, ethnic/racial make up, rural & urban landscapes and musical legacies, yet there is an American mythology. It is probably tweaked depending on your experience, but it is uniquely American. It is always fascinating and pretty disheartening  to have politicians & pundits stuff their definition of American Patriotism down our throats. A conspiciously missing flag pin is heresy, rural America as the ”Real America”, pitting supporters of the War vs. dissenters of the policy. These are all misguided, opportunistic and divisive. Images like these remind us of the unique legacy we share.

CIRCUS FREAKS NEED APPLY!

beardedladytattooladyfatladyzultarliontamerclown1

Let’s face it. We are all freaks. My right hip pops out of its socket at will (great party trick, until it turns arthritic). My friend, Melissa, has a curious and hysterical reaction to clownish dolls. I am sure her therapist has logged hours to this phobia. My husband, Erik, never mixes his foods. If there are three things on his plate (chicken, peas, rice). He must finish one before, he moves onto the next. Freaky! At www.teezeria.com, we embrace our inner freak and kinda think it is part of our charm.

NEW PRESIDENT OBAMA DESIGNS!

Thus far, Obama is still shiny. No missteps. If this is any indication of what we have in store for us, we are looking pretty good! There is no telling whether he is just paying lip service to this whole “I am everyone’s president” thing but if his appointments are telling, which I think they are, we have a well-heeled, pragmatic bunch leading the way out of this mess. So much for those nay-saying Chicken Littles. The sky is not falling because Obama got elected and we are not diving into a Marxist regime. Imagine that.

We have come out with new designs to commemorate Obama’s election and still have the perennial favorites. One of which is worn here by Spike Lee. Check it out!

OBAMA WINS!!!!!

Unbelievable. Sometimes a moment is so huge that it takes almost a sureal bent. That is how this feels, at least for me. Paul and I, accompanied by Erik and Beth, watched the results come in at Front Page News in Atlanta. As soon as Obama took Pennsylvania, we knew it was over. Then,  Virginia sealed the deal.

After McCain’s graceful speech and Obama’s reconciliatory and electrifying speech in Grant Park, we made our way to Ebenezer Baptist Church, aka Martin Luther King Jr.’s church. It was a scene of controlled jubiliation, as if it still had not sunk in. Strangers hugged each other, offering nonverbal congratulations. Tears welled up for generations, slowly made their way down smiling faces. Happy dances abound.  My husband, Erik, at 6′1 with strawberry blond hair, encapsulated this moment perfectly for me. Proudly wearing his “Barack to the Future” shirt, he made his way down the street and was met with laughs and cheers. People grabbed him to take pictures with him. The shirt was a hit, he was a bigger one.  A white guy outside the most famous black church in America, no hidden motives just wanting to be part of history.

COOL TRAVEL SHIRTS. Around the world in a few clicks!

We all love traveling. Everyone from incoming College Freshman to Playboy centerfolds list it as their “interests”.  How much do you really love it? Show the love, people! Wear a shirt that reminds you of foamy steins in Germany, killer baklava in Greece or the time you ran up the pyramids in Mexico.
