OBAMA WINS!!!!!
Unbelievable. Sometimes a moment is so huge that it takes almost a sureal bent. That is how this feels, at least for me. Paul and I, accompanied by Erik and Beth, watched the results come in at Front Page News in Atlanta. As soon as Obama took Pennsylvania, we knew it was over. Then, Virginia sealed the deal.
After McCain’s graceful speech and Obama’s reconciliatory and electrifying speech in Grant Park, we made our way to Ebenezer Baptist Church, aka Martin Luther King Jr.’s church. It was a scene of controlled jubiliation, as if it still had not sunk in. Strangers hugged each other, offering nonverbal congratulations. Tears welled up for generations, slowly made their way down smiling faces. Happy dances abound. My husband, Erik, at 6’1 with strawberry blond hair, encapsulated this moment perfectly for me. Proudly wearing his “Barack to the Future” shirt, he made his way down the street and was met with laughs and cheers. People grabbed him to take pictures with him. The shirt was a hit, he was a bigger one. A white guy outside the most famous black church in America, no hidden motives just wanting to be part of history.
